In every person’s life, after graduating school, comes a moment when he or she asks himself: “what should I do with my life next?”.
That is a pretty hard one. I would not refer myself to a medium – no one has a crystal ball. Therefore, it is a difficult question to answer. Never the less, there are some guidelines which can lead us to the right answer. Or atleast get us closer.
Ask yourself:
1) Who are my parents and what they are teaching me? What did they pass on to me?
Definitely involve your parents in this process. They can tell you what you were interested in during your childhood. They might have observed you showing interest in some activities. Domestic education and personal development is extremely important and I, as a recruiter, always ask about it.
2) What do I like doing?
Do not think about monetization for now. It doesn’t matter. You will figure this out one day (you can use a consultant, expert or any other professional on how you can make money with this). I recommend you to go for a walk or a trip. Or just be alone with yourself, with your thoughts. Realize what brings you joy and happiness. Try things. Explore. Go to different courses. Understand more who you are.
3) Who is my role model?
Who do you like? Who has an impact on you? Why has this person an influence on you? as yourself that. Maybe you share the same values. Maybe you can join his/her movements/activities. If you do not have or know this person – try to search for him/her. It can lead you to your answers. Open your eyes and make you wander. “Maybe I should do the same. Maybe I can be like this person. Or even better, maybe I can become even better if I do it”. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what you do. As long as you do it and love doing it. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel. Try to become part of it and you can motivate each other by supporting each other. You know what, it doesn’t even mean you have to know each other 😉
4) Is there any chance I can become better if I repeatedly do it?
That is very important. When building a career, you should be capable of improving it. Grow with it. Becoming a true professional. That is a very crucial step in your personal development. By repeating your activities involved in it, you grow. Choose wisely where and into what you will invest your time. We all have a limited amount of it 😉
5) “If I fail, can I keep on doing it?”
Failure is part of the process. You might probably fail or not succeed in your path to building your career. When it happens, can you stand back on your feet and continue? Is there any chance of repeating the same step/stage/phase etc? Can I learn from my mistakes? If the answer is “yes”, it might be a good indication you have chosen a good career path. Because if you cannot learn from your mistakes and keep on going, maybe the path you have chosen is not the right path.
Simple answer is, because others won’t.
